Karen Kamel, general manager, McCann Health

After completing her Bachelor in Pharmacy at Cairo University, Karen Kamel worked in various communication agencies in the MENA region as well as at corporations like GSK Consumer Healthcare in Germany, where she also completed her MBA at the European School of Business. She brings over 15 years of experience in healthcare communication.

In 2014, she helped launch, and successfully led Ogilvy CommonHealth MENA, and joined McCann Health in 2018 as the general manager for the region. Her expertise areas include health and wellness communication for pharmaceutical and consumer brands, public health awareness, promotional and educational communication targeting patients and healthcare professionals across a wide range of therapy areas.

Always trust your gut! If you feel something is wrong, that is because it usually is!

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

Pitching, I love it! I really enjoy all the excitement around meeting new clients, cracking complicated briefs and bringing teams together.

What’s the most frustrating thing about your job?

The hardest part of my job is encouraging pharma clients to go out of their comfort zone! And tight timelines of course, especially for the projects that are due yesterday!

If not this, what would you be doing?

Definitely on the beach… somewhere : )

If you had ten million dollars, what would you do?

I would invest in health tech startups.

Finally, why are you (still) in this industry?

To make a difference! And move the needle on health and wellness, which is currently one of the fastest growing industries. Wellness trends are inspiring, consumers are reading labels, change is happening and it’s the absolute right time to be in this industry and disrupt!
